Selling more cars is mostly arithmetic: more conversations, more of them turned into appointments, more of those who show, and more who come back and send a friend. Each habit below moves one of those numbers.
Answer in minutes, not hours
The first salesperson to reply usually gets the conversation. Answer web leads, texts, and messages within five minutes during the day, and first thing in the morning for anything that came in overnight. A short, human reply that answers their question beats a perfect one an hour later.
Follow up until there is an answer
Most buyers do not buy on the first contact, and most salespeople give up after one or two tries. Run a short cadence instead: a text right away, an email the same day, a text the next day, something new on day three and day seven, and a close-the-loop message at two weeks. Then stop until there is a real reason to reach out.
The words for every step are in the text message templates.
Set appointments, not maybes
“Come by anytime” is how a buyer disappears. Offer two specific times, confirm the day before, and text the morning of with the car pulled up and ready. Shown appointments close at a far higher rate than walk-ins, and you control when they happen.
Know the lot and the numbers
Walk the lot every morning. Know what came in, what sold, and what has been sitting. Be able to explain a payment, a trade value, and a rate in plain words, without running to the desk for every question. Buyers trust the person who can answer.
Handle the stall, then set the next step
“I need to think about it” usually means one specific thing is unresolved. Ask what it is, help with that, and agree on what happens next before they leave. The word tracks cover the common ones: price, payment, the trade, the spouse, the other dealership.
Build a book of your own
Every customer you sell is a future sale and a source of referrals, if you keep in touch. Keep your own list, separate from the store’s system: name, number, car, delivery date. Check in at a week, a year, and when their lease or loan is coming up. Ask the service lane for owners whose salesperson left, and introduce yourself.
Ask for the review and the referral
Ask every customer, plainly and once, a few days after delivery. Reviews with your name in them bring in buyers who ask for you; referrals are the cheapest, warmest leads you will ever get. The how-to is in the reviews guide.
Be findable as yourself
Give buyers one place to find you: a page with your name, your reviews, the live inventory, and a way to text you. Put that link on your card, in every bio, and in your email signature. When a past customer’s friend starts shopping, they should be able to find you, not just the store.
Track four numbers every week
- Conversations
- new people you talked to this week, from any source
- Appointments set
- a day and a time, confirmed
- Appointments shown
- the ones who walked in
- Sold
- and how many of them found you, not the store
The weakest ratio is where your next sale is hiding. Few appointments set means follow-up; few shown means confirmations; few sold means the visit itself.
Questions
- How can a car salesman sell more cars?
- Answer every lead in minutes, follow up on a schedule until you get a yes or a no, set appointments instead of waiting for walk-ins, and build a list of your own customers who send referrals and come back. Most salespeople who sell more do the same things as everyone else, more consistently.
- What is the most important skill in car sales?
- Follow-up. Most buyers do not buy on the first visit, and most salespeople stop after one or two attempts. A short, consistent cadence of texts, an email, and a call sells cars that a better closer never gets the chance to.
- How do I get better at car sales when I'm new?
- Learn the inventory cold, learn the phone-up, and shadow the top seller for a week. Write down every objection you hear and the answer that worked. Ask every customer for a review and a referral from your first sale. And keep your own list of customers from day one.
- How many cars does a good car salesman sell a month?
- It varies by store and brand. Ten to twelve a month is often treated as a solid month, and top performers sell well over twenty. The gap is mostly repeat and referral business, which comes from the habits on this page.
- What should I say when a customer says they need to think about it?
- Ask what they are weighing, plainly, and offer to help with that specific thing: the payment, the trade, the other car. Then set the next step before they leave. The word tracks for this and other stalls are in the templates library.
